Sometimes you randomly stumble across a person that inspires you to take a step back and think about life and the way you’re living it. That’s exactly what happened to us here at Magisto. While reviewing some of the most-viewed Magisto clips on YouTube we stumbled across Wesley Hughes. Wesley is an amputee with one of the most inspiring stories we’ve ever heard.
Wesley lost his leg less than three years ago. He told us how via email. “On the morning of January 11, 2009, something happened that would change me for the rest of my life. While I was practicing for a Giant Slalom Event at Wisp Resort I lost control of my outside edge and skied right off the trail and down the 10-foot embankment going about 30 mph. I was told that my foot most likely broke through a thick layer of ice on the embankment and as my body continued to move forward my leg did not. I suffered a major compound fracture to my tibia and fibula and severed my popliteal artery. I did not look down at my leg and only thought it was broken and that I would be out for the rest of the season. On January 20, 2009 my leg was amputated just above the knee.”
“Most people would think it was the end of their life, that they wouldn’t be able to walk again, or that people would think poorly of them or that they could never be a normal human being again. This was not the case for me. As soon as I left the hospital and went to rehab I was immediately focused on regaining my strength and getting back to the lifestyle I used to live. Just four weeks after amputation I was walking like a pro in my new prosthesis hand-crafted by Mike Corcoran. Over the summer I hit the gym three days a week and swum two days a week to get my body in shape for college and the challenges that it would bring me.”
From Wesley’s Magisto clip, My Life As An Amputee, you can see that he has had a remarkable and inspiring recovery.
As a YouTube partner, Wesley uses online video to inspire and help others who are going through what he has gone through. He tells us, “I found myself soon after my amputation searching the Internet for helpful information about being an amputee. I had questions like how do I get into the ocean? Will I be able to run? What about skiing? Eventually I realized the possibilities were endless. I didn’t want people to just see me for my disability, but rather my abilities. I decided to start making videos for other people who were going through similar situations. I wanted to make a difference in other people’s lives and help others. I went from being extremely shy to the outgoing and exciting individual I am today.”
So how did Wesley find out about Magisto? He tells us, “After a couple years being on YouTube I eventually became a partner. I was super excited about the newfound ways to promote my videos and reach out to my viewers. After looking at some of the video editing software tools, I found Magisto. Making a video using Magisto was simple, quick, easy and fun. I couldn’t be more thrilled about the result and look forward to using it again in the future!”
Thanks so much to Wesley for sharing your inspirational story with us! Readers, start uploading videos to make a Magisto clip of your own.
