Air Traffic Controller – one of the eleven bands competing in our Battle of the Fans contest – began when singer/songwriter Dave Munro was serving in the US Navy as a real-life air traffic controller.
This month we’re rocking out with a new theme called ‘Rock On’ and a ‘Battle of the Fans’ video contest. We’ve invited 11 Sonicbids bands to have their music included in our ‘Rock On’ theme and battle it out for the opportunity to play at SXSW. In this series of blog posts we meet the bands. Air Traffic Controller, made up of members Dave Munro (lead vocals, guitar), Casey Sullivan (bass, banjo, lead vocals), Steve Scott (lead guitar, keys), Richie Munro (drums), Kiara Perico (viola) and Alison Shipton (violin), began when Dave Munro was serving in the US Navy as a real-life air traffic controller.
Dave “sent home 4-track demos he had written and recorded during his deployment. With his enlistment up, Munro returned to hometown Boston and discovered an impressive number of fans, prompting the genesis of the aptly-named indie rock band Air Traffic Controller.”
Inspired by “dreams, highways, movies, loneliness and relationships, and the ups and downs of everyday life,” the band combines electro-pop style with orchestral prowess and often performs live, accompanied on stage by an entire string section. They also draw musical inspiration from “storytellers like McCartney, Cash, Simon and Fleetwood Mac.
You’ll find their song “You Know Me” in our ‘Rock On’ editing style. They tell us that the song “is a duet between two people who genuinely like and understand each other; a conversation about their special bond and a desire to build on the relationship. The song recently won an Independent Music Award for Best Indie Rock Song.”
