The Cannes Film Festival is in full swing in France and we’re celebrating over the next week and a half by sharing some of our favorite cinematic Magisto movies on our social networks and here on our blog. To that end, documentary filmmakers D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus have shared a Magisto movie to promote the Kickstarter campaign for their new project, ‘Unlocking the Cage’, and we wanted to share it with you.
At Magisto we are huge admirers of the work of D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. From Don’t Look Back to the War Room to Startup.com, the team of Pennebaker/Hegedus has won acclaim and Oscar nominations for their work. In 2012 D.A. Pennebaker was the first documentary filmmaker to win a Lifetime Achievement Oscar.
Chris and Penny’s latest documentary project, ‘Unlocking the Cage’, follows animal rights lawyer Steve Wise as he attempts to break down the legal wall that separates animals from humans. Steve wants to change the status of an animal from a “thing” with no rights to a legal “person” with some irrevocable protections. In a bold move last December, he filed the first-ever lawsuit for animal personhood on behalf of four captive chimpanzees in New York State. Tommy, a twenty-six year old former chimpanzee actor, living alone in a garage on a used trailer lot became the first plaintiff. The lawsuits gained international media attention.
